Are you ready for a new adventure? Learn to fly tailwheels and have more fun! Come find out what flying by the seat of your pants is all about. Whether you want to earn a tailwheel endorsement or simply want to fly low and slow across the Texas Hill Country, tailwheel training is great fun. We use the Piper Super Cub as our training airplane. This is the airplane that is used in Alaska and other areas where simple, rugged transportation is required. The Super Cub provides “stick & rudder” flying at its best. Our airplane is equipped with Tundra tires for landings on unimproved surfaces and vortex generators for improved low speed handling. Great visibility, especially with the window open, means you feel more in touch with the world of flight. Tailwheel training will make you a more instinctive pilot, no matter how much time and experience you have. New pilots or old pros, all benefit from flying the Super Cub. If you are beginning your flight training with us, you will typically fly your first 10-12 lessons in the Super Cub before switching to the Cessna Skyhawk. Then, at the end of your Private Pilot course, we will complete your tailwheel training and provide the tailwheel endorsement allowing you to fly tailwheel aircraft in the future. If you are already a licensed pilot, tailwheel training will usually involve around 10 hours of instruction to complete the tailwheel endorsement. There is no knowledge test or flight check ride required. Many pilots choose to schedule their tailwheel training over a long weekend. This maximizes learning and usually lowers the total time required. If you prefer to schedule your training over a series of lessons, we can arrange a tailwheel training program that fits your schedule. We can also provide accommodations in our Hill Country Guest House as part of a mini-vacation. Just get in touch to discuss a plan that works for you. Either way, your tailwheel training will take place over the beautiful Texas Hill Country as we explore small grass runways and even some “non runways” around the lakes and hills. Each flight will last 1-2 hours with a rest stop part way through. We’ll then stop for lunch before saddling up again. Even with a couple of training flights per day, you will have plenty of time to relax and enjoy the varied activities around the area. The focus is on fun and instinctive flying techniques. You will learn how to communicate with the airplane in a new way as you practice flying rectangles, slooooow flight, wheel landings, slips to a landing, 180 power off approaches and much more. Your tailwheel training will stress energy management techniques that will make all of your flying easier, safer and more enjoyable. |
